Portrait of Susan by Sam C.
My name is Susan Alexandrite, I'm an analog photographer from Southern Connecticut.
My primary focus as an artist is capturing intimate portrayals of subcultures, whether it's people indulging in their hobbies/special interests, the lives and joy of marginalized groups, or often both, I like to shine a light on people being who they are and doing what they love!
I shoot exclusively analog for two primary reasons:
First, I find the process to be fun! Shooting film is an incredibly tactile experience with many steps and moving parts, and taking my film from the box all the way to being able to print it is incredibly satisfying.
Secondly, it connects me to a rich history of queer photography. In not-so-distant times when being queer was far less accepted, it was an incredible risk to take film with any sort of intimate shots to a commercial photo lab for processing, so many queer photographers processed and printed their own film. As a queer person who shoots mostly queer subjects, it makes me feel connected to the history of my community.
When not taking photos, I'm a full time psychology student working towards my bachelor's degree with the eventual goal of getting my LPC and opening my own private practice!
