Queer People and Their Hobbies: Love Letters to My Friends
This series started as an expression of how queer people are fundamentally the same as straight people. Despite conservative propaganda, they are normal people who have hobbies, passions, and loves; maybe even ones a straight audience shares. However, as the project went on I grew tired of that framing and the grovelling that comes with it.
Instead, the project became a love letter to my queer friends and acquaintances. Many of the photos have the subjects cast in an angelic light, a true reflection of how I view these wonderful people. My relationships with my friends and my community is holy, and I always feel honored to worship at the altar of our mutual love and respect.
This series culminated in a book that included handwritten love letters to the subjects alongside their portraits. I decided to bear my soul in these letters, not caring whether the reader fully understood the context around what I wrote. This project was a joy to make over the course of the year and took me from one end of the country to the other, and I cannot imagine a better way to have spent a year.
